Discover the World, Gently

If you’re looking to travel in a way that’s immersive, respectful, and far from the usual tourist trail, our Small & Traditional tours offer something truly special. These carefully curated journeys take you to countries where traditions thrive, history is alive, and tourism has yet to leave a heavy footprint. With the guidance of local experts and a dedicated UK tour leader, you’ll experience the real spirit of each destination in a relaxed, authentic way.

Our very first Small & Traditional tour took travellers deep into rural Romania back in 2009. Its success sparked the beginning of a growing collection of unique holidays to destinations such as the Danube Delta, Moldova, Uzbekistan, Georgia, Albania, Armenia, and Kyrgyzstan. These places still retain their originality and charm, perfect for travellers seeking a deeper connection with culture, people, and place.

What sets these tours apart is their intimate scale. Group sizes are always capped at 20 people, and often far fewer, allowing for a more personal experience and greater flexibility. With small groups, there’s room to follow your curiosity - whether that means stopping to speak with a shepherd, visiting a beekeeper, or watching a local artisan at work in their own home. Every itinerary is thoughtfully designed, not just around sightseeing, but around understanding.

These journeys are guided by the same passionate team who have run our Romanian tours for over a decade. Rail travel remains part of many itineraries, but it's not the priority, especially in remote regions where the most interesting places lie beyond the tracks. What matters most is capturing the soul of a destination, and that means travelling by road when needed, eating local food, and staying in traditional accommodation.

Rather than large chain hotels, we stay in locally owned guesthouses, boutique hotels, and family-run pensions, full of charm and character. In rural areas, this means fresh, home-cooked meals often made with organic ingredients grown nearby, offering a true taste of the region. This commitment to staying local ensures that your travel supports the community directly.

As a specialist in rail travel, Ffestiniog Travel brings its deep-rooted passion and expertise in railways to every tour - even within the Small & Traditional collection. Where possible, we incorporate rail journeys into the itinerary, whether it is using a country’s national rail network to move from one region to another or seeking out charming steam trains, narrow-gauge routes, and scenic heritage lines that add richness to the holiday.

A Small & Traditional tour is more than just a holiday, it is a cultural exchange, a gentle adventure, and a chance to see the world differently. Let us take you to places where authenticity still reigns, where history and hospitality go hand in hand, and where small groups make for big experiences.
