Travel Tips
- Each season in Italy has its own appeal, but spring and autumn generally offer the best combination of good weather, fewer crowds, and enjoyable travel conditions.
- Travelling to Italy by train via Switzerland - especially including the iconic Bernina Express if time allows in your itinerary - will offer a seamless combination of natural beauty, cultural diversity, engineering feats, and above all else – comfort!
- This tour allows ample time to travel on tram networks in Milan, Rome and Naples. Keep an eye out for Milan’s iconic yellow trams as these are often the most scenic routes. In Rome, trams can be crowded particularly during rush hours, you should be prepared to stand if needed. Naples’ tram network is extensive however they tend to be slower due to traffic congestion – always account for extra time here.
- Trenitalia’s Frecciarossa services have 4 classes. It is often worth checking availability in business (1st) class as you may find that the difference between it and standard class is. negligible (in fact we’ve known 1st class tickets to be cheaper in some instances!)
- Be sure to include at least 3-4 nights in Rome, to ensure sufficient time to explore its 6 tram lines as well as other must-see things such as the Colosseum, Pantheon and Trevi Mountain. You may also wish to visit Vatican City.
- When visiting Naples, be sure to include a journey on the Circumvesuviana line. Tickets for the 950mm narrow gauge line can be purchased using a contactless bank card (“Tap & Go”), alternatively the GoEav app allows you to book your tickets in advance without the need to visit the ticket office.
- As you begin your journey home via Turin, remember to visit Piedmont Railway Museum – its collection includes a variety of historic locomotives, carriages and railway artifacts that showcase the evolution of rail transport in Italy.
