Travel Tips
- Fly via Singapore for a direct connection to Darwin in Northern Territory. A stopover of a day or more can help your body to adjust to the time difference more easily.
- There’s arguably no better way to travel south than Journey Beyond’s ‘The Ghan’ train. Spend two nights onboard Gold, Gold Premium or Platinum and enjoy spectacular all-inclusive food and beverages. Stops are also made along the route, with excellent included excursions as well as upgraded options.
- Adelaide, the capital of South Australia, is a charming city known for its festivals, thriving arts scene, food, and proximity to beautiful beaches and wine regions. Allow at least 1 or 2 days here, there’s plenty to do.
- Travel from Adelaide to Melbourne is possible by air or road, but why not take the eco-friendlier option: The Overland train, one of Australia’s oldest long-distance trains. Enjoy sweeping vistas of the Mallee and Grampian regions as the train winds its way through both South Australia and Victoria.
- No train lover’s trip to Victoria is complete without a ride on the famous Puffing Billy Steam Railway. Travel through the magnificent Dandenong Ranges, with lush fern gullies brushing past and Mountain Ash trees towering overhead. Find it in Belgrave, a short metro train ride away from Melbourne’s city centre.
- Melbourne is a vibrant, multicultural city with a rich arts scene, diverse food culture, and plenty to explore - allow at least 1 or 2 days to see the main sights. Stay in the city centre to make use of the Free Tram Zone, which covers many of the main attractions in the city’s central business district (CBD).
- Sydney is one of the most iconic cities in the world, known for its stunning harbor, beautiful beaches, and vibrant cultural scene. Sydney’s ferries are not just a mode of transport but a fun way to take in the views of the harbor. The Circular Quay to Manly ferry offers some of the best vistas – why not travel out to Manly late afternoon and return at night to see the city lights.
- New South Wales’s XPT services run between Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Dubbo, Grafton and Casino. These comfortable trains offer a low-carbon footprint to travel long distances, with much of the journey possible in daylight hours so you can take in the varied landscapes.
- The Spirit of Queensland train offers a comfortable overnight service between Brisbane and Cairns, be sure to request a ‘RailBed’ for travel akin to a business class flight.
- Cairns is a popular tropical destination located in Far North Queensland, Australia.
